Bootstrapping Windows Servers with AWS EC2

When working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2 instances, bootstrapping refers to using scripts provided at launch to configure new EC2 instances (servers). Concerning Windows servers, there are several considerations when determining the best method of bootstrapping. Bootstrap scripts can be applied directly from the management console, but we will be looking at a programmatic method of using bootstrapping scripts through the AWS CLI. There are many alternative choices. Many can be quite elaborate. This approach is one with very few dependencies. This scope of this blog covers creating a batch file that will run at the command prompt using the AWS CLI interface.

Outlook 2013 Connectivity Issues with Office 365 (HSRESULT:0x80040115)

Assessing the Problem 

For months, I have been battling connectivity issues with Exchange Online from home. My Outlook seems to function fine at work, on wifi tether, but when I get home, the connectivity is unstable. Some of the symptoms I've been seeing are:

  1. Message stuck in outbox
  2. Frequent Sync Errors
  3. No messages coming into inbox, then all of a sudden a stream of messages come in

If you happen to be a Windows Admin (you know who you are) and are beginning to work in the Amazon Web Services Environment, there are some things you need to know! Unless you are at least a little familiar with Linux, you are in for an adventure in confusion. As with any product there is a learning curve when you first begin to explore it. The first challenge is learning to “speak the same language.” Even though I have experience using Linux, I still stumbled until I digested the explanations. Be careful! The language/concept barrier can lead to a great deal of confusion and difficulty. There are many AWS terms that have special meaning.
